Opabin means "Rocky" in Stoney. Studies of the lake bottom sediments at Opabin Lake and Lake O'Hara shows only one glacial advance for the last 8000 years, the Little Ice Age, some 3000 years ago. Glaciers were absent in the area above the elevation of Opabin Lake. The upper valley supported subalpine forest.
