The Waterton Lakes were named by Thomas Blakiston (Palliser expedition) for naturalist and explorer, Charles Waterton.
Waterton National Park was established in 1885 as Canada's fourth National Park. The park's theme is "where the mountains meet the prairie".
The three Waterton Lakes are among the largest in the Rockies.
The park is 264 KM south of Calgary and 130 KM south west of Lethbridge.
Unlike the other Rocky Mountain Parks which have roads within, Waterton Lakes is at road's end.
The Canada-U.S. bondary runs through the upper lake. Glacier National Park in Montana is connected to Waterton. In 1932, the two government created the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the first of its kind. In 1979 Waterton-Glacier and the surrounding lands were designated an International Biosphere Reserve.
