Bruce continued his efforts. In 1916, he suggested that the National Parks Branch complete the road. In return, Bristish Columbia would donate a strip of land 8 KM wide on either side. It was approuved in 1919.
Kootenay National Park was established in 1920 making it the 10th National Park in Canada. The parkway opened in June 1923.
Kootenay is a native word that means "people from beyond the hills". It comes from Kutenai native that lived there when the first Euro-Canadian arrived in 1800.
