Jasper Forest Park was established in 1907 after a proposal for another railway between New Brunswick and British Columbia that would cross the Rockies at Yellowhead Pass. The town of Jasper originated in 1911 as a railway settlement named Fitzhugh, in honor of the vice president of the Grand Trunk P.R.. Jasper National Park is the largest of the Rocky Mountains parks with its 10 878 sq. km.
